High school team scores after Day 2 of the Iowa state track and field meet 2025

One day left.

That is all that is remaining to try and secure a team title at the 2025 Iowa high school state track and field meet. So far, the Blue Oval has been running red hot, with some record-setting performances and individuals across the state securing glory.

We're going to take a look at some of those high-profile outings from Day 2 at Drake Stadium, and how that sets up the field with one day to go:

Class 4A Boys: Cedar Falls surges to first place, but Ankeny looms

  1. Cedar Falls – 49
  2. Iowa City West – 43
  3. Dowling Catholic – 38.5
  4. Ankeny – 32
  5. Ankeny Centennial - 22

Outlook: Behind stellar outings from several areas on May 23, including a photo finish for senior Jaxon Schreiber to win the 400-meter hurdles, the Tigers vaulted from second place to first headed to the final day.

The team dropping in the standings is Ankeny, from first to fourth. Not so fast, though. The Hawks enter tomorrow with the top qualifying or preliminary times in the 100, 200 and shuttle hurdle relay. They also have two top-five times in the 110-meter high hurdles and a strong contender to win the 800 and 1600 in senior Ethan Zuber.

To say the least, Ankeny has a lot of points left to earn as they look to end the weekend as back-to-back state champions. Still, keep an eye on Dowling Catholic and Ankeny Centennial to make late leaps as well.

Class 4A Girls: Waukee Northwest separates from the field

  1. Waukee Northwest – 47.5
  2. Ankeny – 33
  3. Pleasant Valley – 32.5
  4. Indianola – 27
  5. Cedar Falls and Johnston – 24

Outlook: The Wolves look strong to win their third title in four years, the program's first since 2023, as they jumped to first place by a 14.5 point margin. For May 24's events, they have the top qualifying or preliminary times in the 800, sprint medley and the 4x100 and 4x400 relays, along with several other strong times in other events that could earn points.

Pleasant Valley is the next best challenger. However, with the strength in numbers the Wolves have headed into the final day, it's going to be a tall task. If Waukee Northwest holds, it would be the eighth time in nine years (not including the canceled 2020 meet due to COVID-19) that either Waukee or Waukee Northwest has won the Class 4A girls title, with 2024 being the lone exception.

Class 3A Boys: Quentin. Nauman.

  1. Western Dubuque - 30
  2. Gilbert - 28
  3. Newton - 27
  4. Pella - 26
  5. Center Point-Urbana, Waverly-Shell Rock and Clear Creek-Amana - 24

Outlook: Western Dubuque's Quentin Nauman is doing some unprecedented things on the Blue Oval this weekend. In the distance medley, Nauman was handed the baton while in seventh place. He not only roared back to take first, but did so nearly four seconds faster than Des Moines Christian by the end of the race. His 800-meter split time was 1:47.498, which would be the all-time Iowa record if he runs that tomorrow in the open 800.

Nauman has a real shot to not only win one, but two state titles (800 and 1600) tomorrow and set two all-time state records in the process. Gilbert and Newton are both in strong positions to leap, but there's a scenario where Nauman's efforts could be enough for Western Dubuque could win the team title.

Class 3A Girls: Anybody's race heading into Saturday

  1. Mount Vernon - 32
  2. Clear Lake 30
  3. ADM - 29
  4. Decorah - 28
  5. Gilbert - 25

Outlook: The Mustangs held onto their lead, but a handful of teams narrowed the gap.

The teams to watch headed into the final day are ADM and Gilbert. ADM has the top two times from the 100-meter hurdle preliminaries and those individuals lead the top shuttle hurdle relay team. So, along with a few other strong sprint relays on Saturday, they should be in contention.

Gilbert will also contend, led by Keira Andersen in the 800 (top qualifying time), Sarah Fedderson in the 1500 (fifth-best qualifying time) and with the top preliminary time in the 4x100 relay and second-best preliminary time in the 4x400 relay.

Class 2A Boys: Okoboji vaults into first place

  1. Okoboji - 32
  2. Denver - 27
  3. Camanche and Spirit Lake - 26
  4. Manson NW Webster and MVAOCOU - 22

Outlook: Okoboji jumped from third to first on Day 2 with strong showings from their first-place distance medley team and a pair of 400 hurdlers. But it remains a competitive team race at the top between Okoboji, Denver and Spirit Lake.

In particular, watch for Spirit Lake and...Treynor. Spirit Lake has the top time and the third-best time in the 110-meter hurdles, and the second-best times in the 4x100 relay and shuttle hurdle relay.

The surprise here could be Treynor, despite not scoring a team point, the Cardinals have the top preliminary times in the 100, 200, 4x100 relay, 4x200 relay and the 4x110 hurdles. They could vault from zero points to first with a good final day on the Blue Oval.

Class 2A Girls: Van Meter and Tipton separate from the pack, but Pella Christian looms

  1. Tipton - 34
  2. Van Meter - 32
  3. Emmetsburg - 22
  4. Pella Christian - 20
  5. Ogden - 17.5

Outlook:  Tipton and Van Meter remain at the top of the field, but there's a team lingering below that could hurdle them all.

That team is Pella Christian, which heads into tomorrow with the top qualifying or preliminary times in the 100 and 200-meter dashes, as well as the sprint medley, the 4x100 and the 4x400. That's 50 points that the Eagles could snag in those events alone, along with multiple other point scorers. Watch for Pella Christian to soar in the standings late.

Class 1A Boys: Lisbon makes a move

  1. Lisbon – 27
  2. Riverside - 20
  3. Lenox – 18
  4. Woodbine – 17
  5. ACGC, West Hancock and New London – 16

Outlook: Hello, Lisbon.

Sitting in seventh place at the start of the day, the Lions soared to the top behind a first-place finish in the 4x200 relay and a second-place finish in the distance medley. With the top sprint medley qualifying time, the second-best 4x100 relay preliminary time, two top-six qualifying times in the 100 and the fourth-best 110-hurdle time, Lisbon sits in a good place ahead of the final day.

Still, watch for Riverside, which lurks only seven points behind with some scoring potential in the sprint medley, 110 hurdles, 110-meter shuttle hurdle relay, the 4x400 relay and the 800. Given that Lisbon has just 27 points in first, many teams could make a late push with just a couple of strong finishes as well.

Class 1A Girls: St. Edmond holds lead heading into final day

  1. St. Edmond – 31
  2. St. Albert - 24
  3. Lake Mills and Pekin- 21
  4. HLV-TC, Nashua-Plainfield and Saint Ansgar - 18

Outlook: With a second-place finish from junior Anna Lursen in the 400 hurdles and a fourth-place finish in the discus from senior Mariah Meyers, St. Edmond scored 13 points to remain in first place. Lursen is the 800 favorite on the final day, in addition to leading a point-scoring threat in the 800-sprint medley team. With a good day, Lursen could be the difference in holding on for the team title.

However, several teams lurk from St. Albert, HLV-TC, Saint Ansgar, Maquoketa Valley and others that could contend. In short, there's a lot to be decided in a competitive field.
