Hope men's lacrosse shatters school scoring record, claim MIAA regular-season title

The Hope College men's lacrosse team needed one win to clinch the outright MIAA regular-season title, and needed some offense to get there.

The Flying Dutchmen got more offense than they ever have before, scoring a school-record 30 goals in a 30-3 win over Alma College on Wednesday on the road.

Hope repeated as regular-season champs and has won a league-best five MIAA titles.

Hope will be seeded first for the MIAA Tournament that begins on Saturday, April 26, and receives a first-round bye. The Fl‌ying Dutchmen will host a semifinal on Tuesday, April 29, at a time to be announced at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

The Hope College men's lacrosse team claimed the MIAA regular-season title on Wednesday.

The Flying Dutchmen (11-4, 6-0 MIAA) had 18 different goal scorers to top the program's previous best of 27 goals in 2014 against Dubuque University.

The 30 goals are tied for the eighth-most in an NCAA Division III game this season.

Hope led 5-0 against Alma, then 17-2 at halftime.

Freshman Luke O'Connell contributed a game-high six points with four goals and two assists.

Three of O'Connell's teammates chipped in three goals apiece: senior Samuel Haensly, junior Carl Bailey and freshman Weston Godbold. Haensly also recorded two assists.

Four more Hope players finished with two goals: Senior Nick McCreery, junior Will Tobias and junior Jackson Early.

Sophomore Gibson Heethuis totaled one goal and four assists.
