How did Hawks rookie Asa Newell perform in his 10th G League game?
Atlanta Hawks rookie Asa Newell neared a 30-point double-double in the G League on Tuesday, leading the College Park Skyhawks to their second straight win.
Newell tied a season high with 29 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots in the 127-126 overtime win on the road against the Windy City Bulls. He went 12-of-18 from the field in 33 minutes as the Skyhawks improved to 9-20 in the regular season.
Despite a 54-point explosion from Bulls guard Mac McClung, Newell tallied 17 points in the fourth quarter and overtime as the Skyhawks overcame an 18-point deficit. He slammed in the game-winning dunk to hit the target score in extra time.
Newell has played sporadically for the Hawks, averaging five points and two rebounds in 40 appearances for coach Quin Snyder. He is one of 23 rookies to register a double-double this season after recording 12 points and 10 rebounds on Oct. 25.
The 20-year-old is averaging 22.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists while shooting 57.5% from the field in 10 games with the Skyhawks. He has registered four double-doubles, including a 29-point, 12-rebound and seven-assist effort on Jan. 21 in a loss to the Maine Celtics.
With playing time at a premium, Newell has had the chance to log extended minutes and stay in a rhythm on the court. The organization will likely look to provide him with continued opportunities with the Skyhawks over the remainder of the G League season.
