The season marks a historic performance for Miami, its first NCAA bid since 2007 and its first at‑large selection ever, and the RedHawks are seeded No. 11 in the Midwest Region, opening tournament play in the First Four in Dayton.
Their opponent, the SMU Mustangs, earned an at‑large bid with a 20–13 record and an 8–10 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play, finishing in the middle of the ACC standings before a second‑round exit in the ACC Tournament. SMU also carries an 11 seed in the Midwest Region and will aim to use its experience and league schedule strength to knock off Miami (OH) and advance to face No. 6 Tennessee in the Round of 64.
