HS FOOTBALL: Carbondale Area, Susquehanna, Montrose in action Saturday
Carbondale Area can only worry about what is in front of them and what they can control on the field.
That starts with Saturday afternoon’s game at Susquehanna.
The Chargers are 4-4 overall and 1-2 in the Lackawanna Football Conference Division III. They take on the Sabers (0-3, 0-8) at 1 p.m. at William Emminger Memorial Field at Susquehanna High School.
Last week, the District 2 Class 3A playoff field had the number of qualifiers reduced from eight to four. Carbondale Area is in seventh place in the power rating standings entering the weekend at .441.
Wins would certainly help, but the Chargers may still need some help to jump three spots into playoff contention.
Carbondale Area has done well in its four wins. The Chargers have defeated Nanticoke Area, Holy Redeemer, Holy Cross, and Montrose and averaged 42.0 points per game. In their four losses, however, when playing teams with an overall record of 26-5, they have lost by an average margin of 35.8 points per game.
Francisco Roman has run for 646 yards and scored 12 touchdowns to lead Carbondale Area. He ranks third in rushing yards and second in rushing touchdowns in Division III.
Caedon Voglino has added 334 yards rushing and four touchdowns, and fullback Cole Balderas has run for 236 yards and scored three touchdowns and has caught 12 passes for 159 yards and two scores. Quarterback Cole Becchetti has thrown for 379 yards and five touchdowns for the Chargers.
Susquehanna is looking to end the season with some positivity. The program’s two closest games were a 20-14 loss to rival Montrose and a 27-20 loss to Holy Redeemer.
Ryder Hobart has 398 yards rushing and four touchdowns. Quarterback Caedon Ston has thrown for 150 yards and a touchdown, and Mason Keyes has 10 receptions for 159 yards and three touchdowns for the Sabers.
The second game on Saturday has Montrose (2-6) playing at Renaissance Academy (0-8) at 1 p.m. at Great Valley High School.
Timothy David had 46 yards rushing, and Hudson Aukema had 39 yards on 14 carries for the Meteors in a loss to Tunkhannock last week.
Zaimer Covington is the leading rusher for Renaissance Academy. He ran for 111 yards on 13 carries in a loss to Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech, which is a common opponent for the two programs.
Montrose lost to CMVT, 38-12, and Renaissance lost 34-20.
Quarterback Elijah Arthur threw for 110 yards and two touchdowns, and freshman Isaiah Arthur caught four passes for 86 yards against CMVT.
