Igor Shesterkin makes 36 saves, Rangers score three late goals in 4-0 win over Sabres

The Rangers beat the Buffalo Sabres 4-0 on Thursday night at the KeyBank Center. 

Here are some takeaways…

- Mike Sullivan's squad got off to a much better start than in Tuesday’s season-opening shutout. They came out firing from just about everywhere on the ice and were much tighter defensively, outshooting Buffalo 10-2 just a little more than halfway through the first period. 

- The Rangers got one past Sabres goalie Alex Lyon with just over nine minutes left in the period as Alexis Lafreniere somehow tucked a juicy rebound home from the side of the net for the team's first goal of the season -- Artemi Panarin and Vincent Trocheck picked up the assists.

Trocheck was forced out of the game early, leaving in the second with an upper-body injury. 

- The second was a much different story for the Blueshirts, as they were a bit more sloppy. They took three different penalties in the middle frame but were able to kill each of them off thanks to some big-time stops from Igor Shesterkin, getting him up to 24 saves for the contest. 

- The Rangers put this one away for good late in the third -- first Carson Soucy ripped a wrister past Lyon from the left circle, then the captain J.T. Miller deflected home a Braden Schneider shot from the point, and finally Adam Fox finished things off with the empty-netter. 

Miller finished the victory with a goal, an assist, four hits, and a +3 rating after a quiet opening night showing. 

- Shesterkin was spectacular on the night, stopping all 36 shots he faced to earn the 22nd shutout of his career.
