James Conner returns to Arizona Cardinals on reworked contract
The Arizona Cardinals have reworked the contract of one of their veteran leaders. According to NFL Media's Tom Pelissero, the Cardinals and running back James Conner agreed to a revised contract for 2026.
Conner was due a $1 million roster bonus on March 15 and was scheduled to make nearly $6.4 million in 2026, holding a cap hit of more than $9.8 million. Many expected him to be cut for cap purposes.
That will not be the case. We do not know yet what the terms of the deal are, but he likely is taking a paycut to avoid getting released and having to find a new team.
Conner played in only three games, rushing for only 95 yards on 3.0 yards per carry before suffering a season-ending ankle injury.
The team captain is now 31 years old.
This could change offseason plans for the running back position for the Cardinals. However, considering Conner's age and the fact he is coming off a season-ending ankle injury and was not running explosively before the injury, they probably still will address the position in one way or another.
The new deal will create cap savings, but how much will not be known until his new salary is known.
