Jamin Davis cut says a lot about Jets rookie LB Kiko Mauigoa
New York Jets general manager Darren Mougey got a head start on submitting his initial 53-man roster.
The Jets made a handful of cuts on Sunday, roughly 48 hours ahead of Tuesday's mid-afternoon deadline. One of the surprising early cuts was veteran linebacker Jamin Davis, who occasionally received first-team reps throughout training camp.
A former first-round pick, Davis joined the Jets in 2024 via waivers and was re-signed by Mougey earlier this offseason. He's now been released after failing to establish himself as a depth player.
The Jets parting ways with Davis speaks volumes about their confidence in rookie linebacker Francisco Mauigoa.
Davis is a bit of a surprise; he worked with the starters at times in camp. McCrary-Ball, Mauigoa and Barnes next up for the 3/4/5 spots at LB. https://t.co/dNqM5B2dtO— Rich Cimini (@RichCimini) August 24, 2025
The Jets selected Mauigoa in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL draft at No. 162 overall. The former Washington State and Miami standout played extensively throughout the preseason. Mauigoa earned 67 total snaps, making a pair of tackles, according to Pro Football Focus.
The Jets have two outstanding linebackers in Jamien Sherwood and Quincy Williams. They'll do the heavy lifting up the middle for Aaron Glenn's defense.
A rookie like Mauigoa will be tasked with playing a supporting role while also securing snaps via special teams. Mougey's decision to release Davis instills confidence in Mauigoa's ongoing development.
