Jarren Duran Controversy Draws Strange Statement From Guardians
The Cleveland Guardians rightfully condemned the fan who allegedly taunted Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran about his 2022 suicide attempt.
Duran engaged with a fan sitting near the Red Sox dugout after the seventh inning of Boston’s 13-3 victory over Cleveland on Sunday. Progressive Field security caught the fan, who attempted to run up the concourse, and removed him from the stadium.
The Guardians subsequently issued a statement, though the press release lacked two significant aspects. First, the Guardians did not name Duran, instead referring to him twice as a “player.”
Cleveland’s press release began with, “We are aware of the situation that took place during today’s game between a fan and one of the Red Sox players that violated our fan conduct policy.”
Later, the Guardians wrote, “We apologize to the Red Sox organization, the player involved, fans in the area and are addressing the situation.”
Strangely, the Guardians didn’t publicly apologize to Duran by name despite the gravity of the situation. Red Sox coaches, first-base Stu Scheurwater, and Boston infielder Ceddanne Rafaela all restrained Duran throughout the altercation.
As of Monday morning, it is also unclear if the Guardians banned the fan from Progressive Field. Despite the fan’s engagement with a player and subsequent attempt to run, the Guardians didn’t reference a punishment in their statement.
“We have identified the fan in question and will work with Major League Baseball regarding next steps,” read the press release. “We strive to provide the best experience to visiting players and fans, and that fell short today.”
Duran and Red Sox manager Alex Cora each complimented Progressive Field security.
“When you open yourself up like that, you’re also opening yourself up to the enemies,” Duran said, according to Major League Baseball’s official website, “but I have a good support staff around me along with teammates and coaches, which is awesome.”
