Jayden Daniels and Terry McLaurin prepare for year two

Jayden Daniels is dialing in with Terry McLaurin.

Since McLaurin signed a three-year $96 million extension with the Commanders on Monday, the seventh-year receiver has gotten back to work with his second-year quarterback, Jayden Daniels.

Daniels, the 2024 Offensive Rookie of the Year, is revving up for year two with his newly re-signed WR1, where the two are hoping to back up their run to the NFC championship game eight months ago.

McLaurin missed the entire training camp and preseason due to his contract holdout and Commanders’ head coach, Dan Quinn, emphasized that it would take some “time on task” to get the quarterback-reciever duo back up to speed.

Quinn spoke to the QB-WR duo’s ability to play “complementary football” and play off each other's strengths.

“Here's a guy that can really go and get on top of people and catch it over different shoulders on a deep ball, and a quarterback who's got the touch to do it…”

“They can support one another on two of the things they both do really well.”

In 17 games last season, Daniels threw for 3,568 yards and 25 touchdowns, to McLaurin’s 82 receptions, 1,096 receiving yards, and 13 touchdowns – second most in the league.

McLaurin was Daniel’s most targeted receiver in 2024 (117), racking up 26 more looks than tight end Zach Ertz (91), who was targeted second most.

The six-foot, 210-pound receiver also had the most “big plays” (12) on the team, five receptions of 50+ yards, including an 86-yard touchdown v. the Cowboys.

This year, the duo is working on honing their craft, focusing on more routes explicitly designed for McLaurin.

“Yesterday, we ran a deep play action that was over to Terry. That was a good route that you'd seen before. So now let's work this one some more. This one a little bit more. Jaden is excellent with that. To work a specific route with a specific player on some things. And so that's what you'll see more with him and Terry.”

Quinn emphasized the importance of working on timing and understanding the rhythm between the quarterback and receiver.

“It's not all the same for every player. And so that's kind of the challenge of it, from a quarterback and a receiver,” Quinn said. Not the playing zone where you're back facing the quarterback, but deep, overs, comebacks, the timing of it. So that's what they'll continue to work through.”

Daniels and McLaurin will return to action at 1:00 pm on September 7 for Week 1 of the 2025 NFL season against the New York Giants at Northwest Stadium.
