JJ Redick expresses frustration about consistency of NBA officiating

The Los Angeles Lakers had one of their worst performances this season on Saturday when they lost to the Los Angeles Clippers, 103-88. It wasn't even as close as that final score would suggest.

They shot just 38.6% from the field and went 6-of-38 from 3-point range during that game. While one may be tempted to make an excuse for them since they were without Austin Reaves, Deandre Ayton, Rui Hachimura and Gabe Vincent during the contest, and since Luka Doncic missed the second half with a leg contusion, it was simply a woeful effort against one of the NBA's worst teams.

Afterward, Lakers coach JJ Redick criticized the consistency of the officiating in the NBA, especially when it comes to the league's system of challenging calls made during a game.

“Overall, the consistency, it’s something I’m gonna talk with them about tomorrow. The consistency needs to be addressed. That needs to be addressed, and it will be. I think any coach, any player, what we ask for is consistency. That’s not to single any official out or any crew out, it’s not about that. We need to know what it is night to night. We’ve had a number, and this is where I get frustrated a little bit and I keep asking the league to please reach out to me and respond to every time I do the coach’s feedback thing, I don’t get any response from the league, nobody ever reaches out to me.

“The way we do challenges and the definitions of challenges and X, Y or Z and why you can or can’t, it’s different with every different crew. We’re supposed to have the guy at the replay center, whoever is in charge that night, we’re supposed to have some level of consistency. And the definitions just get changed every single night.”

There were a couple of times in the game where one could argue it looked like the Clippers got away with too much contact when a Lakers player was attacking the basket. While officiating wasn't the reason the Lakers lost Saturday's game, every player and coach in basketball simply wants the entire crew responsible for officiating a game to be consistent in how it does so.
