Jon Jones in talks for UFC White House retirement fight
Jon Jones has begun his negotiations to be selected as one of the few to represent mixed martial arts on the grandest stage of them all: the UFC White House.
Of late, Jones has had a love-hate relationship with the UFC. After capturing the heavyweight title and later securing a single defense of his throne, the 38-year-old stalled what was considered by many as the biggest fight in the division's history, before later backing out of it completely and conceding his belt.
Since then, Dana White has been hesitant to trust Jon Jones again, shedding doubt on a retirement fight at the UFC White House; an opportunity Jones is relishing. But after months of silence, it seems that once sour relationships are healing and negotiations are beginning to take place.
"I'm in negotiations with the UFC about this White House thing, as well," Jones confirmed during an appearance at The Brook casino and entertainment complex in Seabrook, New Hampshire.
Rumors of Jon Jones featuring at the UFC White House have often accompanied questions of who will be granted the chance to ruin his retirement talks. A name regularly mentioned is Alex Pereira, who has previously welcomed the matchup.
Whether Pereira is the man called upon or not, Jones believes the opportunity is one he cannot pass up.
"I'm a very, very, very proud American," Jones continued. "I cannot wait to represent one more time. So, we'll see what happens."
Hopes for the White House show to be the UFC's best-ever event is the sport's worst-kept secret. Fans have played matchmaker since the spectacle was announced eight months ago, building fantasy cards with their favorite fighters present and super fights plentiful.
Whichever side of the fence supporters sit on regarding Jon Jones and his legacy, it's hard to deny that any event featuring the best talent must have him competing. For many, Jones is the greatest of all time, and what better way to end a legendary career than retiring, essentially undefeated, in front of the United States president on the White House South Lawn.
