Lincoln Riley voices frustrations over ruling in DJ Wingfield eligibility case

On Monday, USC football suffered a significant blow when a judge denied offensive lineman DJ Wingfield’s lawsuit against the NCAA for an addition season of eligibility. Following the ruling, Wingfield will likely not be able to suit up for the Trojans this fall.

It is certainly a major disappointment for USC, who seemingly just lost one of their projected starting offensive linemen for the season less than two weeks before kickoff. On Thursday, head coach Lincoln Riley voiced his frustration with the ruling and the process behind it.

“Your eligibility depends on what state you’re in and what judge you get,” Riley said. “It’s sad that it’s gotten to this point, to be honest.”

Riley was likely referring to another lawsuit from this week, where several West Virginia football players in similar situations to Wingfield were granted an additional year of eligibility. The head coach is correct in that the inconsistency between rulings makes zero sense whatsoever, and is something that needs to be addressed in college football.
