Maxx Crosby’s Raiders future reaches crossroads after latest update

Maxx Crosby has been the heart of the Las Vegas Raiders for seven years, but that relationship appears to be reaching a breaking point. The defensive end has been the franchise’s most consistent player during a stretch where consistency has been hard to find.

He has put up 278 solo tackles, 161 assists, 69.5 sacks, three fumble recoveries, and one interception in his NFL career. Five Pro Bowl selections tell the rest of the story. He has shown up, worked hard, and set the standard.

Then last December changed everything. General manager John Spytek shut him down for the final two games, a decision widely seen as tanking for draft positioning. Crosby left the facility frustrated, and the tension has not gone away.

It’s been clear since then that he is open to moving on, and the Raiders might need to accept that reality.

The Athletic’s Michael Silver recently shed light on just how worn down Crosby has become with the organization.

“Crosby hasn’t made a stink publicly, partly because of his deep affection for the Raiders’ fan base, but it’s clear that he has exhausted all efforts in Vegas. He’s had a new boss every 12 seconds, with one winning season out of seven to show for it.” Silver wrote. “Including Rich Bisaccia, who took over for Gruden on an interim basis for the final three months of the 2021 season, Crosby has played for five head coaches; Kubiak would be his sixth.”

Raiders’ reported Maxx Crosby asking price

If the Raiders take quarterback Fernando Mendoza first overall, a full rebuild becomes inevitable. Crosby will be 29 next summer, which does not align with a long-term plan.

He is in his prime and built for playoff football, not another retooling phase. The Raiders, lacking tradeable assets, could flip him for much-needed draft capital.

The asking price, though, is steep. Las Vegas reportedly wants a return similar to what the Dallas Cowboys gave up for Micah Parsons last August: two first-round picks and three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kenny Clark.

That is indeed a bold comparison. Parsons was 26 and entering his fifth season at the time. Crosby also recently had meniscus surgery on his left knee, which only adds more uncertainty to any potential deal.
