Miami Dolphins Face Crucial Quinn Ewers Call After Lions Victory

Barring an injury, Miami Dolphins rookie Quinn Ewers almost certainly won’t open the season as the backup quarterback, not after Zach Wilson signed a one-year, $6 million deal in March.
Unfortunately for the Dolphins, their hopes of potentially stashing Ewers — the No. 231 pick in April’s draft — on the practice squad may have ended on Saturday. Ewers went 11-of-17 for 116 yards and two touchdowns in a 24-17 victory over the Detroit Lions.
Ewers connected with Theo Wease Jr. on both scores, the first on a game-tying 15-yard touchdown early in the third quarter. They reunited on an 8-yard, go-ahead score with 12:16 left.

“Basically, the journey of a quarterback is you have to learn to be able to take whatever reps you have, work on your own and apply it to your game,” Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel told reporters.
Wilson also impressed, completing 15 of his 23 passes for 151 yards and an 11-yard touchdown to Dee Eskridge.
What Will the Miami Dolphins Do With Rookie QB Quinn Ewers?
Overreacting to a preseason game is never a good idea, especially not when teams are more selective about playing starters. At the same time, it’s hard to ignore a seventh-round rookie turning heads with an improved second outing.
McDaniel and the Dolphins could potentially find themselves in a difficult situation before final cuts. Miami may need to keep Ewers on the roster as their third-string quarterback so another team can’t swipe him off the practice squad — and it’d be hard to fault anyone for considering taking a chance on Ewers if he’s available.
The issue isn’t keeping three quarterbacks so much as it is the quarterbacks in question. Even after their strong performances against the Lions, it’s hard to feel confident in Wilson or Ewers if Pro Bowl quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffers another injury.
Either way, Ewers is putting himself in a position to break camp with the Dolphins. We’ll see if he can guarantee his roster spot when Miami hosts the Jacksonville Jaguars next Saturday.
