Michigan football's Justice Haynes out for regular season, Jordan Marshall injury update
The Michigan football running back Justice Haynes is out for the regular season, coach Sherrone Moore said Monday, Nov. 17, at his weekly press conference in Ann Arbor.
The Fox Big Noon broadcast reported Saturday that Haynes was done for the season. While Moore pushed back that he was out for the entire year (meaning any postseason game), Moore said Haynes is “probably” is out for the rest of the regular season, with games at Maryland and vs. Ohio State.
“We'll see as the doctors go,” Moore said at Schembechler Hall. “Done for the year, wouldn't put him in that category ... but yeah probably [done for the regular season].”
Haynes hasn’t played since he injured his right foot against Michigan State. He had a procedure and a screw put in it the following week and was using a scooter to get around the following game vs. Purdue If he is done, his season was a stellar one when healthy, with 121 runs for 857 yards (7.1 yards per carry) and 10 touchdowns.
In other news, Moore confirmed Jordan Marshall injured his shoulder against Northwestern, but as he said after the game, X-rays were negative. It’s not yet clear if Marshall will be able to return for Saturday's game against Maryland, but Moore didn’t seem to be concerned about his ability to return for OSU on Nov. 29.
"Feel good about where he's at," Moore said. "We'll take it day by day."
Marshall has 143 carries for 871 yards (6.1 yards per carry) and 10 touchdowns.
Losing Haynes and Marshall, arguably the top running back combination in the Big Ten is a critical blow. Both proved they can be the lead back, as Haynes ran for 100 yards or more and a score in every game he finished, while Marshall has four consecutive games of at least 100 yards and a score.
If neither are available, Bryson Kuzdzal will start. The former walk-on from Grand Rapids had a career-high 15 carries for 51 yards replacing Marshall in the 24-22 win over Northwestern.
"He's explosive, probably faster than Jordan, probably not as strong but he's a strong kid. ... He's got burst. Probably right below Justice in the speed but maybe right at that, can get there.
"Physical runner, great kid who works his tail off and excited to see what he does."
