The St. Louis Cardinals are one of the teams the baseball world will be looking at closely as the MLB trade deadline approaches. Whether it's due to them buying players or selling is still left to be decided.

For that reason, an MLB executive, in a piece from Will Sammon, Ken Rosenthal, Katie Woo, and Patrick Mooney for The Athletic, believes that the Cardinals are one of the most important teams at the trade deadline.

"The Cardinals can be a linchpin for a lot of teams," an MLB executive said. "They have a lot of players teams are interested in."

St. Louis will be one of the most important teams at the MLB trade deadline, as this executive alludes to. They could sell off their players, which plenty of teams are interested in.

They could look to move Nolan Arenado, Sonny Gray, Miles Mikolas, Erick Fedde, Ryan Helsley, Phil Maton, Steven Matz, and even Jordan Walker. There are also other players, like Lars Nootbaar, who could get moved for the right price.

Overall, if St. Louis decides to sell, plenty of players would receive interest. However, the Cardinals are just one game out of the NL Wild Card, and could make a run, becoming buyers instead of sellers at the deadline.

If such a scenario played out, so many teams would miss out on potential trade targets, and it could make a seller's market a lot more favorable to selling teams once the Cardinals players are off the board.

Also, St. Louis could decide to both buy and sell, or do neither and stand pat at the deadline. Regardless of their decision, a lot will be affected due to their decision. Of all the teams at the deadline, none can impact the baseball world quite like the Cardinals can.
