New York Giants training camp: 5 takeaways from Day 9

The New York Giants were greeted by perfect weather for the ninth workout of their 2025 training camp at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Here are five quick takeaways from Saturday's activities.

Skattebo had a "setback"

Rookie running back Cam Skattebo has captured the imagination of the fans with his play this summer, but was limited as the week went on. That is because he suffered a leg injury and was being held out.

On Saturday, head coach Brian Daboll said Skattebo had a "setback," is "day-to-day" and did not practice again.

Cornerback Cor'Dale Flott and rookie tight-end Thomas Fidone were also sidelined.

Backups are getting first-team looks

There's only one way to ensure depth at a position group, and that is to try everyone on the roster in every situation. The Giants don't have a deep cornerback group and are allowing the younger, less experienced players to show their wares.

Montrell Washington shines again

Free agent wideout Montrell Washington, who was brought in for his special-teams ability, has been standing out on offense. The 2022 fifth-round draft pick of the Denver Broncos, who played the past two seasons in Kansas City, continued to make plays on Saturday.

Wan'Dale is getting deeper this summer

Wide receiver Wan'Dale Robinson caught 93 passes last season but averaged just 7.5 yards per reception -- the lowest among NFL wide receivers with 30 or more catches. This year, he's getting out in the world and running deeper patterns (maybe the massive upgrade in the quarterback situation has something to do with that).

Either way, he's making more plays downfield, and many of them have been quality ones.

Phillips is taking the next step

The Giants have a lot of questions at boundary cornerback this summer, but there's no question who the slot corner is. Second-year player Dru Phillips, who stood out as a rookie last year, is one year bigger and one year better. Teams are about to find that out.
