The New York Yankees enter Spring Training with a few questions in the infield, and Anthony Volpe is at the top of them.
However, there are other questions about the infield and some of them could be answered with a trade. FanSided’s Mark Powell pitched a trade to land Chicago Cubs infielder Nico Hoerner, which could work, but he doesn’t play shortstop. He appeared in eight games at shortstop in 2025.
Yankees receive: Hoerner
Cubs receive: Henry Lalane, Kyle Carr
“The Yankees infield defense isn't as questionable as it was around this time last season, but it could still use an upgrade. Hoerner is also a capable contact bat against right-handed pitchers. Considering how lefty-heavy the Yankees lineup is, Hoerner would be a welcomed addition, as Joel Sherman outlines,” Powell wrote.
Hoerner’s value comes from what he does on both sides of the baseball, but he’s a better defensive player than an offensive guy, winning two Gold Glove Awards. He also posted a 114 OPS+ last season, which is more than serviceable and 14 points above the league average.
The right-handed hitting infielder has been in trade rumors throughout the offseason, with some suggesting that deals have been imminent in the past. However, he hasn’t been traded yet, and with Spring Training here, it remains uncertain whether it’ll happen in the near future.
