NFL executives weigh in on potential trade market for Colts' QB Anthony Richardson

What could the market look like if the Indianapolis Colts did consider trading quarterback Anthony Richardson?

At this time, there isn't any indication that the Colts are planning to go this route. However, in a report from ESPN's Stephen Holder, Richardson's agent Deiric Jackson did say there was "a lot to discuss" with the Colts following their decision at quarterback.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler recently spoke to an AFC executive, who shared their thoughts on what Richardson's market could look like.

"It's hard to say," the AFC executive told Fowler. 'The play and the injuries have been bad enough that it's a hard one, but if a team had a real need and since he has plenty of team control left [under contract until at least 2026], he should have something."

Fowler would add that another NFL personnel administrator mentioned Trey Lance, when San Francisco traded him to Dallas, as a potential comp. The 49ers netted a fourth-round pick in that trade.

Fowler also calls this situation a "supply-and-demand issue," noting that the Saints are the only team not to name a starting quarterback at this time. However, my push back there is that whoever might be interested in Richardson isn't necessarily looking at the 2025 season, but would want the chance to develop him and then give him a chance in 2026.

With a fifth-year option for the 2027 season, Richardson is still under team control for three more seasons, including 2025.

In that described scenario, a lot more teams come into play as potential landing spots.

As mentioned at the top, there is no indication that the Colts are considering this option. Throughout the offseason, the organization has been adamant that this is not a make-or-break year for Richardson, regardless of how the quarterback battle shakes out.

However, while anything can happen, as we detailed recently, there isn't much of a path moving forward when it comes to Richardson being the team's long-term option at the position.
