NFL insider breaks down Jacksonville Jaguars' plan at running back

Not that this comes as a huge surprise, but ESPN's Dan Graziano, who spent the day recently at a Jacksonville Jaguars' training camp practice, reported that the team plans to keep four running backs on the 53-man roster and use a committee approach.

Returning from the 2024 roster are Tank Bigsby and Travis Etienne. The Jaguars then added Bhayshul Tuten and LeQuint Allen in the NFL draft.

Keeping four running backs on the 53-man roster isn't unheard of, but it's not the norm either. Going heavy and keeping four backs instead of three means having to go light at another position group in order for the roster math to work out.

It's also not easy getting three backs regular touches in a game on a weekly basis, let alone four.

However, each of these backs does bring something different to the offense. As Graziano notes, Bigsby is the more physical back. Etienne could be a "very dangerous part" of Coen's screen game, while Tuten and his 4.32 speed makes him a big play threat. Allen, meanwhile, could carve out a role on passing downs.

"I would say the thing that really stands out about the guys is their effort and how much they've embraced the opportunity to improve," Grant Udinski said of the running backs. "I think all of those guys had different areas that they wanted to improve individually or collectively, even as a group, and how they've approached the protection scheme, the run game that's a little bit different than some of the things they've done, they've really embraced that and approached that with a growth mindset.

"So that's been awesome to see the young guys step in and have that, and even the older guys have fit right in with that and set the tone with that growth mindset approach, where they're trying to buy-in to the best of their ability."

While the Jaguars may attempt to get each back opportunities in specific situations, Bigsby and Etienne appear to be the two who will shoulder the bulk of the snaps, at least given how training camp practices have unfolded up to this point.
