No. 9 Mitchell baseball draws No. 8 Rapid City Stevens for Class A state-qualifying series

May 13—MITCHELL — A familiar foe stands between the Mitchell High School baseball team and a bid to the Class A state tournament.

As the No. 9 seed, the Kernels (14-8) earned a date with No. 8 seed Rapid City Stevens (13-5). Game 1 of the best-of-three series to decide one of the eight state tournament qualifiers is set for 9 p.m. Central on Friday, May 16, at Mckeague Field in Rapid City. Game 2 and Game 3, if necessary, are slated for 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. Central on Saturday, May 17.

Mitchell played the Raiders three times among 22 regular-season contests, including a doubleheader finale on Saturday, May 10. The Kernels are 2-1 in the head-to-head matchups, having swept the most recent doubleheader by scores of 1-0 and 6-4. Stevens won 13-1 back on April 6.

Harrisburg, Sioux Falls Lincoln, O'Gorman and Sioux Falls Jefferson earned the No. 1-4 seeds, followed by Pierre, Yankton, Brandon Valley and Stevens as top-eight seeds with hosting privileges. The eight series winners advance to the Class A state tournament and will be reseeded after the qualification round. The Class A state tournament is scheduled for May 23-24 at Sioux Falls Stadium.

Sioux Falls Washington, Huron, Rapid City Central and Douglas were eliminated as teams No. 17-20 in the final standings.
