Patrick Kane injury update: Detroit Red Wings forward out Sunday vs Edmonton Oilers
Patrick Kane will not be available when the Detroit Red Wings play their next game.
The Wings take a four-game winning streak up against the Edmonton Oilers at Little Caesars Arena on Sunday, Oct. 19 (3 p.m., FanDuel Sports Network Detroit). Goalie John Gibson will get a well-earned second straight start, but the lineup won't include Kane, who is dealing with an upper-body injury after sliding into the boards.
Coach Todd McLellan said on Saturday that Kane will miss the Oilers game and was still being evaluated. Kane was hurt Friday late in the third period of what ended up being a 2-1 overtime victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning.
His absence alters the one line that McLellan has had together since camp began (and which was first assembled last season by then-coach Derek Lalonde): Marco Kasper centering Alex DeBrincat and Kane. Jonatan Berggren, who has struggled to gain a foothold in the lineup, subbed onto the line in Saturday's practice.
While Kane sits, Lucas Raymond, who was injured Monday against the Maple Leafs in Toronto, appears closer to returning, as he joined line rushes Saturday. Dylan Larkin had a maintenance day, so Mason Appleton, who had been filling in for Raymond, centered the Wings' top line.
Kane, who turns 37 in November, has five points through the Wings' first five games.
