Paul G. Allen estate puts Trail Blazers up for sale, but not the Seattle Seahawks
When the beloved Paul Allen passed away in 2018, one of his final wishes was for all of his assets - including the Seattle Seahawks and the Portland Trail Blazers - to be sold off, with the proceeds going to Allen's various philanthropic endeavors. It has taken nearly seven full years but the sales process has finally begun.
Well... at least for the Trail Blazers.
On Tuesday morning, it was announced the Paul G. Allen estate - managed by his sister, Jody Allen - will begin the formal process of selling the Blazers. However, in the statement issued by Portland, it was explicitly mentioned the Seahawks (as well as the Allen estate's stake in the Sounders) were not up for sale. Moving on from the Blazers will have no impact on those ownership claims.

Jody Allen has been in charge of both franchises since Paul's passing, and she has certainly been taking her time moving on from either. Part of the reason is the fact when Paul passed away, he did not set any time frames for when either franchise needed to be sold. In 2022, Jody issued a statement about how they will be sold eventually, but only when his sizeable estate has been fully dealt with... which could take 10-20 years by their estimate.
Simple math tells us 2025 is less than a decade removed from 2022, so it is interesting to see the Allen estate officially place the Blazers up for sale. Holding onto the Seahawks, on the other hand, is not so surprising. From the outside looking in, it has always seemed as if Jody Allen was more interested in the operations of the Seahawks. General manager John Schneider seems to have a great relationship with her, and former head coach Pete Carroll always praised her for her constant involvement.
However, if the Blazers are to be sold, it only reminds everyone what the Seahawks' eventual fate will be. The Allen estate will eventually have to move on from presumably their most prized possession. But when that day comes is anyone's guess.
