PV Mudcats beat Carmichaels for 1st in FCBL; Oakland, Charleroi split

CARMICHAELS, Pa. — The Potomac Valley Mudcats won a battle of unbeatens Sunday, handing the Carmichaels Copperheads a 3-2 defeat to remain perfect in the Fayette County Baseball League.

Potomac Valley now sits alone atop the league standings with a 5-0 record. Carmichaels fell to 5-1.

Tied at 2 entering the seventh, Logan Rotruck (Potomac State/Keyser) pushed across what proved to be the winning run with a two-out single, plating Bryce Snyder, who doubled to reach safely.

Snyder then retired Carmichaels in order in the bottom half with two strikeouts to end the game. The right-hander from Frostburg State earned the win in relief after he tossed three shutout, no-hit innings with four Ks.

Snyder (Mountain Ridge) tied the game in the sixth with a sacrifice fly, and Landon McAlpine (Salem/Mountain Ridge) belted a solo home run in the fourth for the Mudcats’ first run.

Rotruck had two hits for Potomac Valley, which out-hit the Copperheads, 7-1.

Conner Tingler (Fairmont State) delivered a quality start for Potomac Valley in a no decision. The righty allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit in four innings, striking out six and walking four.

Gianni Cantini (Chatham University) pitched a complete game for Carmichaels in defeat, allowing three runs on seven hits in seven innings. He struck out 10 and walked three.

Potomac Valley takes on its local rival, the Oakland Oaks, on Thursday at Garrett College at 6:30 p.m.

CHARLEROI, Pa. — The Oakland Oaks salvaged a Sunday split, bouncing back from a Game 1 defeat to Charleroi with an extra-inning victory.

Oakland improved to 4-5 in the Fayette County Baseball League with a victory in the nightcap.

Charleroi sits at third-place in the league with a 5-2 mark, behind Potomac Valley and Carmichaels.

The second contest went to extras after the teams were tied at five, but Alex Kennell (Allegany College/Allegany) put Oakland in front for good with a two-RBI triple to left field. Cameron Goble tacked on an insurance run.

Wenkai Campbell (Charleston) gave Oakland an advantage early with a two-run home run to right field in the first inning. He finished with three runs batted in.

Cody Cooper, Campbell and Kennell all had two-hit games. Cooper added a double.

Cooper picked up the victory in relief of Campbell, tossing 5 2/3 frames in which he allowed two runs on four hits. He struck out eight and walked none.

Colton Brightwell went 3 for 4 with a triple and double for Charleroi, and Spencer Behrendt doubled and drove in three.

Brad Banaszak took the loss in relief.

Lazer Glasser pitched the Magicians to a Game 1 victory with a four-hit shutout. He struck out eight and walked two.

Tyler Sankovich belted a solo home run for Charleroi.

Oakland is at the Mill Run Millers at Farmington Ballfield on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

MCHENRY — Potomac Valley jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and held on to beat the Oakland Oaks on Saturday at Garrett College.

Rotruck and Tyson Shumaker (Salem/Mountain Ridge) had two hits each for Potomac Valley. McAlpine, Noah Broadwater (Garrett/Keyser) and Shumaker tripled, and Easton Rhoten (Garrett/Northern) doubled.

Brady McNew earned the victory on the mound, allowing two runs on two hits in four innings, striking out two and walking four.

McAlpine recorded the save with a scoreless seventh. Shumaker allowed an unearned run in two frames of middle relief.

Oakland’s Campbell went 2 for 4 with a triple.

Ty Wickline took the loss in a complete-game effort, allowing five runs on eight hits with two Ks and four walks in six frames.

Oakland 2 Youghiogheny 1

MCHENRY — The Oakland Oaks started the day Saturday with a victory over the Youghiogheny Valley Bulldogs.

Andrew Catone threw a complete game to power the Oaks to the win, allowing two runs on seven hits in seven innings. He struck out eight and walked four.

Chase George singled in Oakland’s two runs in the fourth.

Shane Evans singled twice for the Bulldogs, and Sam Smalich drove in a run in the seventh.
