Raiders name 3 team captains for 2025 season

One sure sign the season is upon us is the naming of team captains. That's what the Raiders did today as the are a few days away from entering game week for the season opener.

They named one team captain for each facet of the game -- QB Geno Smith (offense), DE Maxx Crosby (defense) and P AJ Cole (special teams).

Smith joins the team this offseason via trade with the Seahawks. He enters as the first unquestioned starting QB the team has had since Derek Carr in 2022. Geno enters having proven he is not just the de facto starter for lack of other viable options on the team, but a worthy starter on any team with Pro Bowls in two of his last three seasons.

Crosby is the heart of the Raiders team and the only player on the defense who is currently among the best in the NFL at his respective position. The rest of the defense follows his example for energy and hustle.

Cole has been a Pro Bowler three of the past four seasons and twice and All Pro. He is arguably the best punter in the NFL as well as being one of the better personalities on this team. And, along with Crosby, received a long term extension this offseason to show their commitment to him.

The three of them are the clear choices for Raiders 2025 team captains.
