Ready's Wes Abbott named Ohio State Wexner Medical Center Boys Athlete of Week

Ready football player Wes Abbott was selected the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Boys Athlete of the Week for Sept. 8-15.

Abbott caught six passes for 126 yards and three touchdowns in a 27-26 loss to St. Charles.

Abbott received 36.2% of the vote and was followed by Thomas Worthington football player Sam Shankman, who received 15.2%, Grove City Christian football player Giovanni Cotton (14.4%), Hilliard Bradley football player Declan O'Neil (8.7%), Thomas Worthington football player Dom Parini (7.6%), Circleville football player Hudson Phalin (5.7%), Upper Arlington football player Luke Backes (2.7%), West Jefferson football player Austin Buescher (2.1%) and Hilliard Bradley football player Caden Fabb (2%).

Shankman, the runner-up, completed 24 of 37 passes for 380 yards and six touchdowns in a 42-21 win over Grove City.

Cotton ran for 178 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries in a 38-0 win over Zanesville Rosecrans

O’Neil had 201 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns in a 42-14 win over Marysville.

Parini had nine receptions for 213 yards and three touchdowns in 42-21 win over Grove City.

Phalin passed for 166 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 87 yards and another TD on 17 carries in a 35-8 win over Logan Elm.

Backes completed 17 of 23 passes for 240 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 18 yards and a TD in a 42-7 win over New Albany.

Buescher completed 27 of 39 passes for 435 yards and a program single-game record seven touchdowns and ran for 39 yards and a TD on five carries in a 62-26 win over Cedarville.

Fabb caught three passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns and returned a punt 71 yards for a TD in a 42-14 victory over Marysville.

Also nominated were Worthington Kilbourne football players Jackson Szabo, Shion Jamshidi and Luke Page, Hilliard Davidson football player Dayne Schmidt, Big Walnut football player Nolan Buirley, Centerburg football player Miles Marshall, Groveport football player Jo'Siyah Foster and Mount Vernon football player Mason Richards.

The Athlete of the Week voting recognizes athletes across all sports. 

Nominations are due Monday mornings for competitions that took place the previous week. The boys poll is live until 4 p.m. Fridays. The girls poll is live until 4 p.m. Saturdays.

Once athletes win during the regular season, they're not eligible to be back on the ballot until the postseason. Athletes who have not been a recipient of one of the weekly awards can be nominated more than once.
