Five games into the new season and Alvaro Carreras has been one of the biggest positives for Real Madrid so far.

Brought in from SL Benfica for a fee of €50 million, the Spanish left-back has quickly established himself as the first-choice starter under Xabi Alonso and put on some highly impressive performances, the latest one coming vs Marseille on Tuesday night.

Now, Fabrizio Romano reports that Alvaro Carreras never considered any option apart from Real Madrid during the summer transfer window.

Having left the club five years ago, in 2020, the 22-year-old had his heart set on a return to the Santiago Bernabeu.

As such, he never explored any other opportunities this past summer even when Benfica kept knocking back Real Madrid’s approaches.

At the same time, Real Madrid also never wanted another left-back apart from Carreras. Despite links to players like Miguel Gutierrez and Theo Hernandez, among others, the Merengues only had their eyes on their current new signing.

Xabi Alonso had made it clear that he wanted Carreras and eventually Los Blancos succeeded in his signing, with young talent Rafel Obrador moving the other way – which unlocked the deal.

Carreras has signed a six-year contract with Real Madrid until 2031, and, as things stand, is the undisputed starter at left-back ahead of Fran Garcia and the injured Ferland Mendy.

So, far he has played five games in all competitions, although he could be rested this weekend against RCD Espanyol in La Liga by Alonso.
