Wednesday will mark exactly 53 weeks since New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole underwent Tommy John surgery, which caused him to miss the entire 2025 MLB season.
Joel Sherman of The New York Post reported Tuesday morning that the 35-year-old will make his return to game action on Wednesday when the Yankees face the Boston Red Sox in Grapefruit League play.
"Gerrit Cole is scheduled to start and throw an inning vs. the Red Sox on Wednesday, The Post has learned. He shared some thoughts on the meaning of it," Sherman posted on Bluesky.
Cole is entering his sixth season in the Bronx after debuting with the Pittsburgh Pirates from 2013 to 2017 and pitching for the Houston Astros in 2018 and 2019.
The six-time All-Star has finished inside the top 10 of the Cy Young voting seven times in his career and broke through with the AL award in 2023.
Cole finished the 2024 campaign 8-5 with a 3.41 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 99 strikeouts across 95 innings pitched covering 17 regular season starts. He was solid in New York's run to the World Series that year as well, going 1-0 with a 2.17 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 22 strikeouts over 29 innings (five starts) in the playoffs.
