ROUND THE BASES: Southwestern sweeps past McCreary Central

The Southwestern Warriors were looking to earn a sweep of the McCreary Central Raiders in their final regular season district contest Tuesday at home. Despite some struggles early on, the Warriors eventually found their stride and earned that sweep in six innings of work, defeating their district foe 11-1 via the run rule.

Jonah Brock led the way with five RBI’s in the win, with Pierce Jasper adding a solo home run during the contest. Chandler Taylor added two RBI’s, with Benjamin Stewart and Jayce Gager each adding one RBI. Jackson Couch had three hits in the win, with Jayden Taylor adding one of his own. Couch also had two stolen bases during the game, with Gager adding one as well. Jonas Gallagher earned the win in his start on the mound, going three innings while allowing no runs on just two hits with three walks and one strikeout. Reno Scott pitched two innings in relief and allowed one run on four hits with two walks and one strikeout. Jayden Taylor pitched one inning in relief, allowing just one hit.

Southwestern improves to 11-11 and finishes 5-1 in district play, with the Warriors next slated to travel to Russell County on Friday.

Maroons earn sweep of Rebels

The Pulaski County Maroons were back at home on Tuesday, looking to complete a perfect district schedule with a win over Casey County. It was a clean sweep for the home team as well, as the Maroons took down the Rebels 9-2 for the series sweep.

Chase Farmer and Ben Gaskin each had three RBI’s and a home run apiece in the victory, with Carter Ross adding two RBI’s. Kam Measel and Skylar Stringer each had a hit during the game, with Will Adams adding three stolen bases and Farmer, Cason Findling, Cal Miller and Kade Hargis adding one stolen base apiece. Dawson Branscum earned the win, pitching a complete game while allowing two runs (zero earned) on six hits with no walks and five strikeouts.

Pulaski improves to 14-5 and finishes 6-0 in district play, with the Maroons next set to travel to Knox Central on Friday.

Lady Warriors survive late Wayne County rally

The Southwestern Lady Warriors were looking to finish with a perfect district record on Tuesday as they took on the Wayne County Lady Cardinals. The Warriors had the lead the entire ball game, but a late rally by the Cards came close to usurping the visitors before the Warriors held on for a 12-8 victory.

Kylie Dalton led the way with three RBI’s, while Abigail Whitescarver and Halle Norvell each added two RBI’s and Zoie Lowery, Arabella Lowery, Brynn Troxell and Macie Gwin added one RBI apiece. Chloe Carroll added a hit during the game, with Troxell adding two stolen bases and both Carroll and Whitescarver each adding a stolen base. Whitescarver earned the win on the mound, going five and one-third innings while allowing eight runs (five earned) on five hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Jayla Singleton earned the save, pitching the final one and two-third innings while allowing no runs and no hits.

Southwestern improves to 12-7 and finishes 4-0 in district play, earning the number one seed in the 48th District. The Lady Warriors will next travel to crosstown foe Somerset on Thursday.

Lady Maroons earn split against Casey with tough win

The Pulaski County Lady Maroons attempted to get a split of their district series against the Lady Rebels of Casey County on Tuesday. In a game that ended up finishing on Wednesday due to weather, the Maroons were able to hold on to an 8-7 victory.

Avery Davis led the way with three RBI’s in the win, with Bella Ellis, Shelbie Sellers, Ryann Sowder, Kynslie Crabtree and Claire Hamilton each adding one RBI. Rilee Ross, Novaleigh Baker and Maggie Gregory each had one hit in the game. Ellis started on the mound and earned the win, going five innings while allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Gregory pitched the final two innings in relief, allowing one run (zero earned) on three hits.

Pulaski improves to 10-11 and finishes 4-2 in district play, with the Lady Maroons next set to host Wayne County on Thursday.
