Scott Boras Issues Pete Alonso Warning Amid Mets Trade Rumors
The New York Mets are shelling out top dollar in 2025 (see their $324-million payroll), and as it is now, they are receiving the desired ROI.
New York's National League franchise has scorched out to a 26-15 start this season, which is good enough to lead the N.L. East on May 12. To sweeten the pie, the Mets are fresh off a thrilling Mother's Day victory over the Chicago Cubs—another perennial contender in the Senior Circuit.
Despite taking a series from the Cubbies in Queens last weekend, much of the attention for the Metropolitans trickled over into the financial realm. MLB agent Scott Boras — who represents All-Star first baseman Pete Alonso — made direct comments on Alonso's contractual situation.
Per Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY Sports, Boras lamented, "Stop looking at first basemen 30 or older and believing they’re in their decline." The statement applies specifically to Alonso, a slugger that turned 30 at the end of 2024.

"When a manager puts you in the middle of the lineup all season, that tells you the value of the player. He gives you the best chance of winning. And Pete is doing that in New York," Boras told Nightengale.
Notably, "Polar Bear" Pete has been on an offensive tirade in the current campaign. Not only was he named April's N.L. Player of the Month, but Alonso is presently slashing .320/.434/.613. All of those aforementioned numbers would be career-highs if play concluded today.
Still, in search of a mega deal, Alonso inked a two-year, $54-million deal over the previous offseason that includes player friendly details. So far, that's worked out fabulously for the Mets, but the time to pay the polar bear will eventually return.

Alonso cites a few reasons for opting to sign a team friendly deal — including a hurricane in his hometown of Tampa that opened his perspective on life — when the slugger could have garnered more. "The free agency stuff became secondary because there were so many personal things in the offseason," stated Alonso.
The right-handed masher also attributed the cohesive talent on this Mets roster as a reason to stick around. He explained, "We had a lot of good momentum. I didn’t want to leave that. So, for me, the biggest priority is playing for a winning organization."
As for Boras' last words to USA Today Sports, he parted simply with, "You're looking at an elite talent."
