Shedeur Sanders receives starting nod over Dillon Gabriel in Week 12

Despite clearing concussion protocol that sidelined him for the Cleveland Browns' Week 11 matchup with the Las Vegas Raiders, former Oregon Ducks quarterback Dillon Gabriel has lost his starting job.

In his place against the Raiders, former Colorado Buffalo Shedeur Sanders completed 11 of 20 passes for 209 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Cleveland beat Las Vegas, 24-10, getting just their third win of the season versus eight losses. Sanders' performance earned him the starting nod for Week 12, sources tell NFL Network's Ian Rapaport.

Gabriel had started the previous six games, going 1-5. On the season, he's completed 59.2% of his passes for 937 yards with seven touchdowns and two interceptions. He's also rushed 14 times for 86 yards. The Browns' offensive line has not been good, resulting in Gabriel getting sacked 18 times in just those six games.

The former Duck standout had to leave his last start, coming against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 11, due to a concussion. Sanders replaced him, going four-for-16 for 47 yards and an interception. But, due to the lack of options at the quarterback position after trading away veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett earlier in the season, Sanders got the first start of his career on Sunday.

He made a number of throws deep down the field, completing one to wide receiver Isaiah Bond for 52 yards. Pushing the ball downfield was something that Gabriel had struggled with. Sanders did throw a touchdown as well, though it was a screen pass that running back Dylan Sampson took to the house from 66 yards out.

It's unclear if or when Gabriel will reemerge as the starting quarterback in Cleveland; but for now, he's the backup behind Sanders for the Browns' Week 12 matchup with the San Francisco 49ers.
