Shedeur Sanders got his first real chance on Friday night, making his NFL debut as the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns in their preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers—despite being listed fourth on the depth chart.

With Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and Dillon Gabriel all ruled out before the game, Sanders stepped up and made the most of the opportunity.

He completed 14 of 23 passes for 138 yards, threw two touchdowns, and added 19 rushing yards. Sanders played into the third quarter before giving way to Tyler Huntley. Cleveland ended up winning the matchup 30-10.

Throughout the game, his biggest supporter—his father, Deion Sanders—expressed his excitement over his son’s performance.

Shedeur Sanders Responds to Dad Postgame

Following the game, Shedeur messaged his dad, “Sorry, Pops, I didn’t do everything I was supposed to, but we’ll live to see another opportunity.”

When asked about moving up the depth chart after his performance, Sanders gave a blunt response:

“I honestly don’t know and I don’t really care. Whenever it’s my turn, I just gotta take advantage of it.”

Many were uncertain about Sanders being thrown into the fire as the starter, especially operating mostly with second- and third-unit players while the Browns rested most of their starters. Yet, he found a way to perform impressively against a Panthers defense that, for a brief period, fielded several starters.

Sanders’ next chance to see the field will come next Saturday when the Browns host the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. One of the more intriguing storylines this week will be how head coach Kevin Stefanski manages the quarterback position if he intends to play Flacco, Pickett, or Gabriel.
