Should LSU football stick to conservative game plan? Brian Kelly shares his take
LSU football returns to Tiger Stadium on Saturday, hosting South Carolina in a Week 7 matchup. All eyes will be on the LSU offense coming out of a bye week.
Last time out, LSU fell 24-19 at Ole Miss. It was another rough outing for the offense. The Tigers couldn't run the ball and Garrett Nussmeier was 1/7 on deep passes.
LSU head coach Brian Kelly met with the media on Thursday and was asked if a more conservative approach would put LSU in a better position to win. Much like the game script LSU followed earlier this season in a 20-10 win over Florida.
"No, I wouldn't identify ourselves offensively as conservative, but I think, you know, if you look at the way we played the game the last two games, it's been much more aggressive on fourth down. You know, I think we played to field position a little bit. You know, I feel like our offense is ready to break out," Kelly said.
Kelly said he doesn't want to hold the offense back with the mindset of putting the game in the hands of the defense and special teams.
"I don't think we're going to play that way. We're going to play to the assets that we have on offense and on defense. I'm not going to go into the game thinking, you know, this is a low-scoring game, keep the points down, kick field goals," Kelly said.
LSU's defense ranks No. 5 nationally in ESPN's SP+ rankings -- one of the best units in the country. LSU needs the offense to hold up its end of the bargain. Expectations were high for LSU's offense entering the year, but so far, the elements have yet to gel.
Kelly has remained optimistic and fans are hoping LSU fixed a few of the problems during the bye week. LSU is set to face South Carolina at 6:45 p.m. CT on the SEC Network on Saturday, Oct. 11.
