Snap judgments, Super 25 results and more from Saturday HS basketball
Luke Ertel put together another big weekend to lead Mt. Vernon to the championship of the Homestead tournament.
The 6-3 Purdue point guard recruit scored a game-high 25 points to pace the Class 4A seventh-ranked Marauders to a 59-39 win over Homestead in the championship game on Saturday evening.
That win came after Mt. Vernon (10-2) defeated Zionsville 50-37 on Saturday morning in the semifinal round behind a 19-point game from Ertel and 10 from Max Vise.
The Marauders knocked off South Bend St. Joseph in an epic 85-78 double-overtime game on Friday night in the first round. Ertel led the way with 36 points in that game and Vise added 21. Standout junior Elijah King led South Bend St. Joseph, last year’s 3A state champion, with 33 points.
Other snap judgments and takeaways from high school basketball this weekend:
Ertel putting team on his back
This is not to be critical of Mt. Vernon’s team, which can beat anyone in the state on a given night. But it is really impressive to see what Ertel is doing to lead a team that has one other really well-rounded player in the 6-8 Vise and a lot of other players capable of filling roles. Watching that game against South Bend St. Joseph on Friday night was another reminder of how much Ertel does for his team - ballhandling, scoring, setting up teammates.
South Bend St. Joseph, which went on to defeat Fort Wayne Carroll 75-58 and Hamilton Southeastern 66-64 to take third place, had Mt. Vernon down by 13 points late in the third quarter before Ertel triggered a 14-0 run that extended to a 23-2 run. St. Joe rallied, then appeared poised to win, before Ertel drained a 3-pointer to send it to a second overtime.
Mt. Vernon’s only losses came to the teams ranked No. 1 and 2 in the state, Fishers and Crown Point. Ertel and Co. will get some well-earned time off until a Jan. 9 home game against Greenfield-Central. The Marauders play just four games between now and Jan. 29.
