SPORTS: Astoria swimmers strong, Knappa on a roll and Warrenton takes a dive

The Astoria swim teams were once again victorious in their league meet against Scappoose. The Fishermen cruised to an easy victory as both the girls and boys teams put together strong performances.

The girls team didn’t pose a contest as Astoria defeated Scappoose 107-44, while the boys hung on for a 94-75 victory over the Cheesemakers.

Astoria had 10 total first place finishers, including three double winners. Senior Emery Young placed first in both the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, senior John Ero was first in the 50 and 100 freestyle and sophomore Roarke Struve was victorious in the 200 and 500 freestyle.

Other winners for the Fishermen girls included Josie Reeves in the 200 individual medley, Alexzandra Nolasco in the 50 freestyle, Lily Smith in the 100 freestyle, Paige Kindred in the 500 freestyle and Ruby Smith in the 100 backstroke. The boys had Sam Reid finishing first in the 200 Individual Medley and Konrad Struve took the 100 backstroke.

Next up for the Fishermen will be the Tillamook Cheese Relay on Saturday. This will be a good midseason checkpoint for the Fishermen, as they will be facing many of the teams from their district including Scappoose, Seaside, St. Helens, Taft and Tillamook.

Knappa basketball continues to roll

Knappa basketball overall is now a combined 8-0 in league play between the two genders. After winning the first two games of this week, both the boys and girls sit atop the Northwest League standings with 4-0 records.

The boys had two dominant performances against Faith Bible/Life Christian and Vernonia/Jewell on Monday and Wednesday respectively. The Loggers took care of Life Christian 65-39 and then returned home to defeat Vernonia/Jewell 53-19 on Wednesday evening. With one more game Friday, the Loggers are starting a league showdown with undefeated Portland Christian. Next Tuesday’s game will go a long way towards determining who the Northwest League Champion will be.

The Lady Loggers have turned their season around after a slow start. They have now won four out of their last five after starting the season at 1-8. With their 48-18 victory over Faith Bible/Life Christian on Monday and a 68-19 victory against Vernonia on Wednesday, the Loggers now sit atop the Northwest Standings. With Clatskanie falling to Nestucca, the Loggers now have a one game lead over both.

The recent good stretch of play for the ladies have seen them move up to No. 15 in the 2A state rankings. A good end to the league season will see the Loggers make the state playoffs once more.

Warrenton girls split, boys run into trouble

Warrenton basketball split against Corbett onTuesday night.

The Warrenton boys got a story about not judging a book by its cover and the girls took advantage of Corbett losing multiple players this summer.

Though the Corbett boys came into Tuesday’s game with just two victories, they showed nothing is as it seems. The Cardinals played an incredibly difficult nonleague schedule and have taken flight once league play started. They lost to Banks by only four points and then handled Warrenton 72-64.

The Warriors also fell to Yamhill-Carlton on Thursday night 47-35, to fall to 1-2 in league play. Warrenton returns home for another difficult league game, as they are set to host Neah-Kah-Nie on Wednesday night.

The girls fared better as they had a split for the week.

They took down rebuilding Corbett’s team 64-22 and then fell to a good Yamhill-Carlton team 34-24 on Thursday. These results continued the Warriors trend of winning one game and losing one.

After this week of action the girls sit at 6-7 on the season and 1-2 in league play.
