Steelers Predicted To Select 3,567‑Yard QB As Potential Aaron Rodgers Replacement
The Steelers are entering a pivotal offseason and face a major decision about their starting quarterback.
While they could consider bringing back Aaron Rodgers for another season if he’s willing to play, the fact that he’ll be 43 by the end of the year pushes Pittsburgh to seek a more long-term solution.
Drafting a quarterback to sit behind Rodgers for a season could be the best option for the Steelers. ESPN’s Field Yates published a mock draft on Wednesday in which Pittsburgh takes Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson with the 21st pick.
“One of the most pressing questions of this draft is how high Simpson will go. He was entrenched in the top-10 conversation midseason before a significant second-half slide. The pros for Simpson? He can throw with pristine accuracy, improvises in the pocket and has enough arm strength to drive the ball downfield,” Yates wrote. “The cons? His decision-making waned down the stretch, as he had four interceptions and a combined 62.6% completion percentage in Alabama’s final six games.
“Regardless, I think the Steelers could take a chance on him here. They might bring back quarterback Aaron Rodgers if he doesn’t retire, but that is far from a certainty. And while new head coach Mike McCarthy has praised Will Howard, he was a sixth-round pick last year. It feels unlikely Pittsburgh would completely anchor its future around him.”
Simpson played four seasons at Alabama, but only started in 2025. In that season, he passed for 3,567 yards and threw 28 touchdowns across 15 games.
