Texas A&M senior Edge is a finalist for the Lombardi Award
No. 3 Texas A&M (10-0, 7-0 SEC) is coming off its historic 31-30 comeback win over South Carolina after trailing 30-3 at halftime, as starting quarterback Marcel Reed threw for a career high 439 yards, including 298 yards and three touchdowns in the second half.
On defense, the Aggie pass rush produced nearly 20 pressures, four sacks, and 10 tackles for loss, led by transfer defensive end Dayon Hayes' six pressures and one sack, while senior edge Cashius Howell produced two pressures and a sack while earning the team's high coverage grade (82.0) per Pro Football Focus.
Howell, who also recorded one of the team's four sacks, continues to lead the SEC with 11.5 sacks and is on pace to earn one of the more prestigious awards at the end of the year, as the redshirt senior is now a finalist for the Lombardi Award.
Joining Alabama offensive lineman Kadyn Proctor, Texas Tech edge David Bailey, and Red Raiders linebacker Jacob Rodriguez, this is the first time in several years that a Texas A&M player has been this close to winning the award, and for those who have watched Howell's progress during his second year with the program, none of this is surprising.
Cashius Howell is one of the nation’s most dominant pass rushers, leading the country with 1.15 sacks per game and ranking among the top 15 in tackles for loss this season. A relentless force off the edge, he has generated 38 quarterback pressures, and his 11.5 sacks are the most by an Aggie in a season since Myles Garrett matched that mark in 2014. Howell is also the first Texas A&M player to earn four SEC Defensive Line Player of the Week honors after a standout performance at Missouri featuring five tackles, a strip-sack, and a quarterback hurry. He is just the sixth SEC player to receive the award four times since it began in 2004, underscoring his status as one of the league’s elite defenders.
Yes, Howell has been Texas A&M's best pass rusher since future NFL Hall of Fame defensive end Myles Garrett graced Kyle Field. Despite his short arm length, Howell has already proven his ability to cause consistent havoc in the backfield with strength and athleticism alone.
With two games left in the regular season, including Saturday's home matchup with Samford, Howell is on pace to end the year with at least 15 sacks.
