The strangest Tennessee Titans-New York Giants trade is complete

So let's get this straight: Brian Callahan, Matt Nagy and Dennard Wilson are all working together, and none of them are working for the Tennessee Titans?

Per a report from NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the New York Giants are set to hire former Titans coach Brian Callahan as their quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator, landing Callahan on John Harbaugh's new-look staff. The move, ironically, pairs Callahan with quarterback Jaxson Dart, who spent his rookie year learning under former Giants coach Brian Daboll. Daboll, now the Titans' offensive coordinator, is the man tasked with mentoring second-year quarterback Cam Ward, who spent his rookie year learning under Callahan.

The Ward-for-Dart trade is one thing. But Callahan's direct report will be new Giants offensive coordinator Nagy, who was one of the two finalists to replace Callahan in Tennessee before the Titans ended up hiring Robert Saleh. From the moment the Titans fired Callahan in October, Nagy was considered the frontrunner, and he interviewed with the Titans for the position twice. That didn't come to pass, and now Nagy and Callahan are working together.

On the other side of the ball, Wilson will coordinate the Giants' defense. Wilson was Callahan's defensive coordinator for each of his two seasons in Nashville.

Maybe the craziest part of this entire connection is this isn't the first time the Giants have built a coaching staff out of Titans veterans. It hasn't even been a few months since the last time it happened. Back in 2025, after Daboll was fired, the Giants' offensive and defensive coordinators were Tim Kelly and Shane Bowen, who worked as the Titans' offensive and defensive coordinators in 2023.

Brian Callahan coaching resume

Callahan was the Titans' coach in 2024 and for the first six games of 2025, compiling a 4-19 record. Prior to arriving in Nashville, he worked as the offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals from 2019-23 and previously spent time as quarterbacks coach for the Detroit Lions (2016-17) and Oakland Raiders (2018).

Callahan's Titans tenure was marred by offensive mistakes and questionable decisions. Turnovers, penalties and other offensive blunders were the theme of his first season, as quarterbacks Will Levis and Mason Rudolph contributed to the Titans' repeated losses despite a defense that ranked near the top of the league in preventing yards. The long series of losses led to the Titans earning the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and selecting Ward, but Ward's presence wasn't enough to keep Callahan's job for long.

The Titans stumbled early in the 2025 season, in large part due to mistakes that fell on Callahan's shoulders including reversible calls that went un-challenged and questionable play calls late in halves that cost the Titans points. Callahan surrendered offensive play-calling responsibilities early in the season, but by the time the Titans lost to the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 6, the decision to fire him had already been made.

Dart was the second quarterback drafted in the 2025 NFL Draft after Ward. Now Callahan will get the chance to work with him as an offensive assistant. Prior to his time in Tennessee, Callahan's track record of working with quarterbacks was excellent: Peyton Manning, Matthew Stafford, Derek Carr and Joe Burrow all are listed on Callahan's resume.
