Today on OTM: The American League is upside down
Not sure if anyone has looked at the American League standings in the past 24 hours, but the following three teams are leading their divisions:
Tampa Bay Rays (11-7): winners of six straight
Minnesota Twins (11-8): winners of 8-of-10
Sacramento Athletics* (10-9): winners of 8-of-11, tied for first with the Texas Rangers
*(I’m calling them Sacramento going forward. They are not moving to Las Vegas until 2028, at best. Enough is enough.)
A list of teams that are in last place, or tied-for-last place across MLB, includes: the Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, Seattle Mariners, Houston Astros, New York Mets, and Chicago Cubs.
For as poorly as the Red Sox have played, they haven’t dug themselves as much of a hole as one would think, with the Rays’ .611 winning percentage leading the way in the entire American League. The Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees are coming to town for the next seven days. No more messing around.
The Major League Baseball season is now 12% complete, approximately one-eighth of the season. Is this a large enough sample size to draw any real conclusions? Are any of these first-place teams for real? Which of these unexpected last-place teams are cooked, if any?
Discuss in the comments, be good to each other, and enjoy the weekend. Take Monday off while you’re at it.
