True freshman and Detroit HSSA POY Bryce Underwood named starting quarterback at Michigan

Michigan football signee Bryce Underwood poses for a photo as he signs for Michigan football on during national signing day at Belleville High School in Belleville on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2024.

True freshman Bryce Underwood will be named Michigan’s starting quarterback this week, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

Underwood is from nearby Belleville and was named the 2024-25 Detroit High School Sports Awards Offensive Football Player of the Year.

Underwood beat out Fresno State transfer Mikey Keene. Davis Warren would have also been in the mix, but he is still recovering from a torn ACL. Thamel reports that the Michigan quarterbacks were informed of the decision on Sunday.

Led by Underwood, Belleville won 38 straight games and two state championships. He was the No. 1 rated player on the USA TODAY Football Composite Recruiting Rankings for the class of 2025.
