Luca Zidane’s (27) decision to join the Algerian national team continues to stir reactions. Walid Bouchenafa, international sports consultant and expert in sports management, shares his insight with Foot-Africa.
Walid, how do you view Luca Zidane’s decision?
This is fantastic news for Algeria, but also for Africa. It’s rare—very rare—to see the son of a European legend choose to represent an African nation. Symbolically, it’s hugely significant.

Specifically, what does he bring to the Greens?
Luca Zidane is a proven goalkeeper in Spain. Algeria has long been searching for a worthy successor to Raïs M’Bolhi. I believe Zidane will fill that gap. In fact, I have no doubt he’ll quickly rank among the top three African keepers.
Beyond the pitch, what impact do you see from this decision?
Huge! We’re talking about a Zidane. His name, his legacy—it goes beyond football. From a sporting perspective it’s a real asset, but it’s also a marketing and media boost. It’s a real spotlight on the Federation and the country.

Absolutely. The Zidane family is deeply attached to Algeria. Zinedine Zidane has always shown pride in his roots and acts of kindness toward the Algerian people. Luca will have no trouble finding his place.
