Washington Commanders announce roster moves during rookie minicamp
The Washington Commanders held their annual rookie minicamp this weekend, hosting five draft picks, 10 undrafted free agents and 21 players in camp on a tryout basis. While most of the tryout players were undrafted rookies, there was a mix of second-year players and veterans trying to earn a spot on Washington's 90-man roster.
On Friday, the Commanders signed one of those players: veteran offensive lineman Tyre Phillips. A 28-year-old former third-round pick, Phillips has appeared in 48 games with 27 starts between the Ravens and Giants. To make room for Phillips, Washington had to make a corresponding move.
On Sunday, the Commanders released two players: offensive tackle Anim Dankwah and safety Trey Rucker. The 6-foot-8, 353-pound Dinkwah initially signed with Washington's practice squad last season and played collegiately at nearby Howard University. Rucker agreed to terms with the Commanders as an undrafted free agent after the 2025 NFL draft. A Northern Virginia native, Rucker played at Wake Forest and Oklahoma State.
So, does this move mean another move is coming? Phillips seemingly replaced Dinkwah on the roster. Do the Commanders have a replacement in mind for Rucker's roster spot? Remember, there was a tryout in Ashburn this weekend. Could the younger brother of a certain team legend be on the verge of signing with the Commanders?
Washington continues Phase 2 of its offseason program on Monday.
