Week 2 football roundup: Everett, Portland St. Patrick, Holt, Fowler among winners

EVERETT 36, BATTLE CREEK CENTRAL 29

Javari Funches punched in the go-ahead rushing score in the fourth quarter to help the Vikings hold off a late push from Battle Creek Central (1-1) for the nonleague home win. Funches led all rushers with 246 yards on 36 carries with five touchdowns and freshman quarterback Jackson Hellwege went 6-for-12 with 100 yards passing for Everett (2-0).

PORTLAND ST. PATRICK 14, MORRICE 7

MORRICE — The Shamrocks scored all their points in the fourth quarter en route to a league win over Morrice (1-1). Brady Leonard finished with a team-high 96 yards and scored the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter and snagged an interception on defense for Portland St. Patrick (2-0). Charlie Thelen had a 64-yard fumble return for a touchdown to get the Shamrocks on the board.

GRAND LEDGE 35, BATTLE CREEK LAKEVIEW 6

GRAND LEDGE — Nick Terranova was 9 of 11 passing for 210 yards and a touchdown and Anthony Baker added a pair of rushing scores for the Comets (2-0) in their nonleague win. Brady Williams had a receiving score, Coleman VanFossen had three catches for 70 yards and Mason Myers ran for 43 yards and a TD for Grand Ledge.

ST. JOHNS 49, IONIA 16

IONIA — Xavier Benjamin picked up 145 yards rushing on 13 carries with three touchdowns to help lead the Redwings to a nonleague victory over Ionia (0-2). Conner Kurncz notched 148 yards passing and three total touchdowns, Alex Oberlin grabbed 71 yards receiving and a score and Bryce Pratl added on 66 yards receiving and a touchdown for St. Johns (2-0).

PEWAMO-WESTPHALIA 52, SARANAC 0

WESTPHALIA — Quarterback Ty Thelen threw for 70 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 62 yards and two scores to lead the Pirates to a CMAC home victory over Saranac (1-1, 0-1). Damon Huhn and Alex Nurenberg each punched in a rushing touchdown and Caleb Blythe and Brandon Anthony each pulled down a receiving score for Pewamo-Westphalia (2-0, 1-0).

HOLT 41, SWARTZ CREEK 0

HOLT — Ethan Melville went 8-for-13 with 125 yards passing, 76 yards rushing and three total touchdowns to help guide the Rams to a home win over Swartz Creek (0-2). LaDon Hatcher led all rushers with 109 yards and a touchdown and Manollo Williams, Greyson Widmeyer and Laterion Perkins each grabbed a receiving score for Holt (1-1).

LAKEWOOD 56, BENTON HARBOR 6

LAKE ODESSA — Carter Stewart finished with 108 yards rushing and two touchdowns to propel the Vikings to a nonleague home victory over Benton Harbor (0-2). Michael Goodemoot tallied two rushing scores, quarterback Max Thrun picked up two passing touchdowns and a rushing score and Brady Makley and Bryer Poll each hauled in a receiving touchdown for Lakewood (1-1).

FOWLER 48, LAINGSBURG 7

LAINGSBURG — Colt Nobach led all rushers with 143 yards on 10 carries as the Eagles secured the CMAC road win over Laingsburg (0-2, 0-1). Eli Thelen finished with 89 yards rushing, Levi Travis grabbed a receiving score and Trevor Spicer led the defense with 8.5 tackles with a sack and an interception for Fowler (1-1, 1-0).

ITHACA 36, LAWTON 7

LAWTON — Gibson Rondy led the Yellowjackets with 238 yards passing, 143 yards rushing and five total touchdowns as Ithaca picked up the road victory over Lawton (1-1). Riley Guild hauled in seven receptions for 106 yards and a touchdown, Connor McMurphy tallied 61 yards and a touchdown and Jacob Crawford tacked on 52 yards rushing for Ithaca (2-0).

LESLIE 34, ADDISON 8

LESLIE — Joel Cranmore went 13-for-21 with 277 yards and three touchdowns and punched in two rushing scores to lead the Blackhawks to a home victory over Addison (0-2). Braydin Johnson hauled in six catches for 131 yards and two touchdowns, Braeden Romero grabbed 77 yards receiving and a touchdown and Hudson Phillips notched 11 tackles for Leslie. 

OWOSSO 47, CRANBROOK KINGSFORD 19

BLOOMFIELD HILLS — Liam Patrick led the Trojans with 214 yards rushing, 94 yards passing and four total touchdowns as Owosso picks up its second straight victory with a road win over Cranbrook Kingsford. Evan Krawczyk notched 109 yards rushing, Talon Newell ran for 41 yards andf two touchdowns and Evan Hunter pulled down five catches for 75 yards and two scores for Owosso (2-0).

OVID-ELSIE 43, MT. MORRIS 6

MT. MORRIS — Brock Spitzley led all rushers with 131 yards on 13 carries with a touchdown as the Marauders secured the MMAC road victory over Mt. Morris (0-2, 0-1). Owen Long went 8-for-14 with 159 yards and a touchdown and ran for 69 yards and a score, Chase Fabus picked up 64 yards rushing and two touchdowns, Jason Harrell punched in a score and Joseph Fabus grabbed 59 yards receiving and a touchdown for Ovid-Elsie (1-1, 1-0).

FULTON 46, BYRON 20

MIDDLETON — Zach Litwiller went 17-for-24 with 175 yards and four touchdowns and ran for 96 yards to help lead the Pirates past Byron (0-2) for the home victory. Kaiden Oliver ran for 67 yards and a touchdown, Parker Billings hauled in two receiving scores and Connor Cunningham pulled down 10 receptions for 109 yards and a score for Fulton (2-0).

HUDSONVILLE 37, EAST LANSING 6

EAST LANSING — BJ Ardister threw for 180 yards and a touchdown for the Trojans in a nonleague home defeat to Hudsonville (2-0). Neveon Yarbrough pulled down 115 yards and a score and Baylor Schanski notched a team-best 11 tackles for East Lansing (0-2).

WYOMING KELLOGGSVILLE 48, PERRY 26

PERRY — Tyger Whitbeck threw for a school-record 397 yards and four touchdowns for the Ramblers in their nonleague loss. Alex Rockafellow added seven catches for 167 yards and two TDs and Jacob Adkins had six receptions for 137 yards and two scores for Perry (0-2).

CONSTANTINE 36, WAVERLY 6

DELTA TWP. — Robert Dorsey threw for a team-high 129 yards and a touchdown for the Warriors in a nonleague home loss to Constantine (2-0). Terell Suddeth-Doss ran for 80 yards on six carries and Tre Burton pulled down a receiving score for Waverly (0-2).

LINDEN 39, CORUNNA 13

CORUNNA — Ota Wilkerson picked up 76 yards rushing and threw for 62 yards and a touchdown for the Cavaliers in a nonleague defeat to Linden (2-0). Ruger Zeeman ran for 35 yards and a score and Isaac Jacobs grabbed a 62-yard touchdown reception for Corunna (0-2).

UNION CITY 36, MAPLE VALLEY 7

VERMONTVILLE — Eli Wright and Teegan McDonald connected on a 33-yard touchdown pass from Wright for the Lions in a Big 8 home defeat to Union City (2-0, 1-0). Kaiden Meyers led the defense with a team-best 11 tackles for Maple Valley (0-2, 0-1).
