What LSU women's basketball's Kim Mulkey said about facing Alabama
LSU women's basketball closes out a three-game home stand against No. 22 Alabama on Sunday. The No. 5 Tigers are aiming for a seventh-straight win and with a ranked team coming to the PMAC, head coach Kim Mulkey isn't taking the competition lightly.
"I'm glad we're at home," Mulkey said following her team's win over Arkansas Thursday. "It is tough to have three games in a week and we've got to be smart tomorrow. We've got to know how long we need to be on the floor. Alabama, heck, they may be the best coaching staff in the SEC based on what they produce."
Since a loss against No. 15 Tennessee, the Crimson Tide rebounded with two-straight wins. Last time out against LSU, Alabama came away with an overtime win in Tuscaloosa during the last week of the regular season. Mulkey recalled the game and gave praise to the staff led by head coach Kristy Curry.
"I know Kristy personally and [assistant coach] Kelly [Curry] personally and I just know what they do for Alabama and I don't think it gets talked about enough," Mulkey said. "Mikaylah [Williams] had the free throw and had a chance to win it there at the end, so, I mean, you're going to have battles. I think the year before we were down at half and came back out and pressed and got back in the game."
Jessica Timmons and Essence Cody lead the team with 16.1 and 13.5 points per game. Mulkey highlighted Cody's presence in the paint and connections to Louisiana on Alabama's coaching staff.
"Their guards are really good," Mulkey said. "Cody's really good in the paint and [they] got a lot of Louisiana connections on that staff. [Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator] Brooks Donald is on that staff who used to be at McNeese State for many years and then she was at ULM. So, we'll welcome them back, but it's time to tip it off and let's go play."
