What we learned from the New York Jets' Week 1 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers
The New York Jets dropped their first contest of the 2025 campaign. It was a Week 1 instant thriller that ended in a 34-32 defeat to the Pittsburgh Steelers. We've compiled thoughts and analysis regarding what we learned about the Jets in Week 1.
Justin Fields has a grasp of the offense
Justin Fields often struggled throughout training camp, leading fans to wonder if he was properly grasping Tanner Engstrand's offense. Those questions were answered with conviction in Week 1. Fields completed 16-of-22 passes for 218 yards and a touchdown, displaying the efficiency Engstrand wants from his passing attack. The dual-threat quarterback was even more dynamic as a runner, scrambling for 48 yards and two additional scores.
The defense needs work
Aaron Glenn was hired for his overall leadership abilities, but the defensive-minded head coach saw his specialized unit struggle versus the Steelers. Aaron Rodgers threw for 244 yards and four touchdowns, and the Steelers offense scored 34 points. Glenn's defense needs to tighten up in Week 2.
The Will McDonald IV breakout should continue
Will McDonald broke out as a sophomore in 2024, recording 10.5 sacks. On Sunday, he sacked Rodgers, his former teammate, on two occasions. McDonald appears primed to be the Jets' top pass-rushing threat for a second consecutive season.
Breece Hall looks primed for a bounce-back season
Running back Breece Hall enters a contract year after a disappointing 2024 season. Hall appeared to possess his old wiggle, having rushed for 107 yards on 19 carries (5.6 YPC). The Jets' rushing attack in general was as advertised, running for three touchdowns.
Brandon Stephens needs to be better
Brandon Stephens was signed to be the CB2 opposite Sauce Gardner. The Jets are hoping to find a long-term solution at that position. Stephens struggled mightily in his debut, having been called for a bad defensive pass interference penalty. The secondary, safeties included, were poor.
