What's next for the Eagles after Dallas Goedert's contract

The outcome many hoped for, and some even expected, has finally come. Dallas Goedert will return to the Philadelphia Eagles. He does so thanks to a one-year deal. Things seemed to be trending in this direction after the void date in his expiring contract was pushed back twice over the past week. Those moves were integral to keeping the talented veteran tight end off the open market. They also prevented the organization from being hit with a significant dead-cap hit of more than $20 million.

Thank some ingenuity and creative maneuvering by general manager Howie Roseman. The Eagles don't just get to keep one of their most reliable offensive weapons. They also gain valuable financial flexibility moving forward.

Here are three of several additional options the Eagles now have. The latter two, in some ways, can also be viewed as domino effects of the first. They can also be executed independently. The point is that Roseman has plenty of maneuverability.

1. Eagles can spread out Dallas Goedert’s $7 million over existing void years.

By reworking Goedert's deal before it expired, the Eagles can spread the new money ($7 million) he is set to make this season across the existing void years in his contract. That accounting move helps Philadelphia preserve valuable cap space for the 2026 season while still keeping Goedert in the fold for another run. Had the contract been voided, all the money previously spread across those void years would have accelerated into the current season. That number would have ballooned past $20 million, which explains why Philadelphia pushed the void date back twice and continued negotiating until an agreement was reached.

2. Philadelphia now has room to add another edge rusher.

The immediate benefit of that cap management is simple. It gives the Eagles flexibility. With additional breathing room, Philadelphia can pursue help at another premium position, particularly along the edge.

Whether that means signing another veteran pass rusher in free agency or exploring the trade market, Philadelphia now has the financial wiggle room to reinforce a defensive front the organization values. Our advice? Draft someone early during the process.

3. It becomes easier to move A.J. Brown before June 1.

Then there's the bigger storyline hovering over the roster. Yes, friends, we must again bring A. J. Brown into the conversation. Imagine what would have happened if the Eagles were forced to absorb Goedert's potential $20 million dead-cap hit while also carrying the roughly $43 million dead-cap figure tied to Brown. That scenario would have made any roster maneuver extremely complicated. No one outside the organization knows exactly why trade talks involving Brown were reportedly paused, but the financial math is easy to understand. With Goedert essentially accepting what many view as a hometown discount, the Eagles have softened the financial blow that could come if they eventually decide to move their star wide receiver.

In other words, one smart move involving Goedert may have quietly opened the door for several others.
