Why the Rams are the most disciplined team in the NFL since 2020

The Los Angeles Rams have been one of the most consistent teams under Sean McVay. They’ve made the playoffs and won double-digit games in seven of his nine seasons as head coach, including two Super Bowl appearances.

That kind of success doesn’t happen by accident. McVay is known as an offensive innovator, but his teams have also been the most disciplined in the NFL since 2020.

The Rams committed the fewest penalties in the league in 2025 (75), and no team has been flagged fewer times in total over the past six seasons, according to CBS Sports. If you roll over the Rams' committed penalties every season, the team is still the least flagged every season:

  • 2025: 75 penalties
  • 2024-2025: 166 penalties
  • 2023-2025: 255 penalties
  • 2022-2025: 331 penalties
  • 2021-2025: 407 penalties
  • 2020-2025: 478 penalties

This is impressive because of its consistency. The Rams seemingly don't lose games because of officiating. And that's a testament to coaching and temperament in the locker room.

It helps, too, when a team is ultra-successful on the field. The Rams are 59-42 over that span with nine playoff games under their belt. They have confidence in themselves and their coaching staff, which doesn't lead to a lot of mistakes on the field that could be called by referees.
