Will John Mateer play QB for OU football vs Texas? Brent Venables 'doesn't know'

NORMAN — OU football coach Brent Venables was coy Monday when asked about quarterback John Mateer's status during his coach's show.

Michael Hawkins Jr. started for the Sooners in last Saturday's shutout victory over Kent State, tossing three touchdowns. Meanwhile, Mateer was fully suited up in pads on the sideline wearing a brace on his throwing hand.

“I don’t know when John Mateer will be back, really not even anything to talk about," Venables said Monday. "He’s on a progression through however long it takes those injuries to heal.”

The Sooners aren't giving away anything to Texas as they practiced indoors on Monday and neither Hawkins or Mateer spoke with local media.

Hawkins completed 14 of his 24 passes for 162 yards and three touchdowns against the Golden Flashes. Steve Sarkisian and Texas know Hawkins well after he became the first true freshman to start a Red River Rivalry game against them last season.

The first SEC student media availability report for the game will be released on Wednesday.
