WooSox rally falls short as Mud Hens take Game 1, 4-2

The Toledo Mud Hens came out swinging Tuesday night, topping the Worcester Red Sox, 4-2, in the opener of a six-game set at Polar Park.

By the end of the second inning, Toledo had already built a 4-0 lead, capitalizing on timely hits and a costly Red Sox miscue.

Brewer Hicklen sparked the offense in the first with a run scored on Manuel Margot’s sharp line-drive single to left. The scoring didn’t stop there for the Mud Hens as Jahmai Jones raced home on a Ryan Kreidler double in the second, with Akil Baddoo hustling to third.

Moments later, Brian Serven’s grounder to first led to a throwing error by Abraham Toro, allowing both Baddoo and Kreidler to cross the plate.

Worcester finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth. Nate Eaton crushed a solo homer, putting the Sox on the board for the first time. A few batters later, Philip Sikes tagged up and scored on a Connor Wong sacrifice fly to trim the deficit to two. But that would be as close as Worcester would get.

Toledo’s Brian Serven was red-hot at the plate, going a perfect 4-for-4 with an RBI to anchor the Mud Hens offense. Hicklen also had a standout night, finishing 2-for-4 with a walk, a run scored, and a stolen base. On the mound, lefty Dietrich Enns earned the win, allowing just one earned run over five efficient innings, striking out five and lowering his ERA to 3.33.

The Red Sox will look to even the series when the two teams meet again tomorrow night at 6:05 p.m.
